The Power of Water in Religion - 2201 Words

Roughly 70% of the human body are made of water. The average human can only live without water for about 3 to 5 days. Nothing can exist without out water, water is the source of life. Mircea Eliade (1996) states â€Å"Water symbolized the who potentiality; is â€Å"fons et origo†, the source of all things and of all existence (p.188). So it makes sense that water plays such a huge role in the religion. While the Islamic, Judaic, Hindu, and Zoroastrian religion may all be different but they do all have practice water rituals. Despite their differences they all believe that water is important, these religions believe that water has the power to purify the soul. (Ablution section para. 6). Some immersion rituals are rabbinic not a biblical requirement. Some immersion rituals mainly focus on menstruation and childbirth. Menstruation was thought to be something that was impure and a woman could make her husband impure from coming into sexual contact with him. According to Encyclopedia Judaica (2007) â€Å"the halakhic regulations appear particularly in the Niddah, which discuss women’s menstrual and non-menstrual discharge. â€Å"On the eighth white day, following the cessation of menstrual flow, the wife must immerse in the mikveh (ritual bath) before marital relations can resume. Jewish girls were traditionally taught to comply strictly and promptly with the regulations connected with the niddah (the menstruating woman)† (Ablution section, p.263). Before ablution are performed one’s body and hair has to be thoroughly cleansed (Ablution section, p. 263). According to Encyclopedia (2014), â€Å"Halakhah demanded a single immersion but three became customary. Post-menstrual and postpartum women usually visited the mikveh at night, and often accompanied by other women (Ablution section, p. 263). Participation in this type of ablution started to decrease in the first half of the 20th century in North America.
